Halong Bay is located in the north of Vietnam, 170 km from the city of Hanoi, in the Gulf of the South China Sea.
In the bay there are more than 3 thousand islands, caves and rocks. Halong in translation literally means "Where the dragon descended into the sea".
There are many legends about the origin of the bay.
One of the legends tells that duringWar with the Chinese to help the Vietnamese gods sent dragons. Dragons spewed precious stones and threw them into the sea. Unexpectedly appearing in front of enemy ships, the stones turned into islands, smashing the ships of enemies into chips. So the Vietnamese were saved, and the family of dragons has since remained to live in the bay.
In 1994, Halong Bay was added to the listUNESCO World Heritage, and in 2011 the bay was recognized as one of the "7 new wonders of the world". The islands in the bay are all different and have a bizarre shape because of what they got their names - Fighting Cocks, Bat, Bull, Dog, Dragon or more romantic, such as the Sleeping Princess. All the islands of Halong Bay are rocky and in many of them you can find caves. The caves are diverse and fascinating with their beauty - they are with lakes, there are with waterfalls, with an infinite number of stalactites and stalagmites. The most unusual have long been adapted for tourists and are the pride of the local population.
The largest cave in the bay is Dougou or «Cave of wooden pillars». It consists of three halls, at the end of the grotto a lake with fresh water. "The Cave of Surprise" Was discovered by French researchers only in1901 year. Stalactites and stalagmites created on the walls of the cave marvelous drawings, and inside there is the Dushy Lake, in which, with drops of water, the aroma of plants growing above the cave falls. All this caused scientists a genuine surprise - hence the name of the cave. No less delight raises and Grotto "Drum", Which got its name due to its impressive sound effect. The longest cave is Kuanghai or "Cave - tunnel" - 1300 meters. The cave is very beautiful, but you can get inside only at low tide. In the most visited caves, there is a multi-level illumination, which makes caves look like fabulous dwellings of underground kings.
